How The Points System Works

I understand that the new season has had its share of bumps in the road but we are reaching the end. Some are wondering how we are determining a "season" champion this year and to answer that you need to understand our new standings structure. So, how does the points system effect the season as a whole? We have had 10 total teams play in at least one tournament this season. The July tournament will decide not only the champion of the July tournament but will also decide who will be crowned the Huntington Wiffleball League season champions.

So as it stands after the June Tournament the season standings are as follows:

1st Place Sit on My Base with 150 pts a 12-5 record

2nd Place Rocket Boys with 120 pts an 8-5 record and a .615 winning pct

3rd Place Make Wiffle Great Again with 120 pts a 7-9-1 record and a .438 winning pct

4th Place Smoking Bases with 80 pts a 8-2 record

5th Place Mothmen with 70 pts a 7-1 record and a .875 winning pct

6th Place Ballerinas with 70 pts a 3-5-1 record and a .375 winning pct

7th Place Master Batters with 70 pts a 3-6 record and a .333 winning pct

8th Place Dinger City with 60 pts and a 4-2 record

9th Place Yellow Beaver Fever with 30 pts and a 0-13 record

10th Place Sheavers with 20 pts and a 0-4 record

Now, I will do my best to explain what all this means. In order to do that I am going to do a review of the May tournament. Most people know that Sit On My Base finally won the championship, beating Rocket Boys to achieve that. But we will look at the overall tournament to explain points and everything else. The May tournament finished as follows:

Before the elimination Tournament (Round Robin Results):

1st Sit On My Base 3-0 and +27 Run Differential (RD)

2nd Rocket Boys 3-0 and +10 RD

3rd Ballerinas 2-1 and +4 RD

4th Smoking Bases 2-1 and +3 RD

5th Make Wiffle Great 1-2 and 0 RD

6th Master Batters 1-2 and -3 RD

7th Sheavers 0-3 and -9 RD

8th Yellow Beaver Fever 0-3 and -25 RD

Final Tournament Standings after the elimination tournament:

1st- Sit on My Base champion (80 points won)

2nd- Rocket Boys runners up (70 points won)

3rd- Make Wiffle Great Again (60 points won)

4th- Master Batters (50 points won)

5th- Ballerinas (40 points won)

6th- Smoking Bases (30 points won)

7th- Sheavers (20 points won)

8th- Yellow Beaver Fever (10 points won)

So, how did MWGA finish third after going into the tournament in 5th place? How do we determine who finishes in which place without place games? Both the tournament seed and when the team is eliminated is taken into account on overall finish in the month’s tournament. Sit on My Base won the elimination tournament so they won the May tournament outright. Rocket Boys were runner ups so they take 2nd place outright. Now this is where the it gets messy. The tournament has multiple teams eliminated in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Time constraints remove the chance to have a 3rd place game. So the best way to determine finish is to base it off seed number and when the team is eliminated. MWGA and Master Batters were eliminated in the Semi Finals. MWGA was seeded as the 5th seed and Master Batters were 6th seed. Since MWGA was the higher seed they finished 3rd and Master Batters were 4th. Ballerinas, Smoking Bases, Sheavers and Yellow Beaver Fever were eliminated in the first round. Ballerinas was the highest seed so they took 5th place, Smoking Bases were the 2nd highest seed eliminated so they took 6th place, Sheavers went in in 7th place and finished 7th, and YBF went in 8th and finished 8th. While Pool Play records play into the finish standings the elimination tournament is more important.

If there is a tie in points, then winning percentage is used as a tie breaker. If both teams have the same winning percentage then overall run differential is used as the final tiebreaker.

We awarded teams for showing up to all tournaments. That’s why MWGA is in 3rd and YBF is not last. The points gained in tournaments were based off of number of teams in that tournament. April had 5 teams so 1st place got 50 points. May had 8 teams so 1st place got 80 points. June had 7 teams so 1st place received 70 points. Points are decreased by 10 points by each place. So in May 2nd place got 40 points 3rd got 30 4th got 20 and last got 10. May 2nd place got 70 3rd got 60 4th got 50 5th got 40 6th 30 7th got 20 8th got 10. June 2nd place received 60 pts, 3rd 50 pts 4th 40 pts 5th 30 pts 6th 20 pts 7th 10 pts.
